Intercultural Learning Exchange Notes
14th April, 2026

Next one July 7th, 2026

Thanks to those that joined the intercultural learning Exchange conversation, it was a very rich conversation. See below bulletpoints from the conversation.

1. Identity, Belonging, and Hidden Barriers

  • People experience being seen or overlooked differently depending on context

  • One can move from being highly valued to feeling invisible in another space

  • True identity is grounded in being a child of God

  • Identity can also become a bridge

  • Age and gender can create safe, non threatening spaces for connection

  • Belonging is shaped by more than race

    • Class

    • Accent

    • Social background

  • Many spaces feel easier for those who understand unspoken cultural codes

  • People feel they belong when they are

    • Seen

    • Heard

    • Cared for

  • Surface welcome is not the same as true belonging

  • Everyday relationships reveal whether inclusion is real

2. Inclusion, Bias, and Lived Experience

  • Experiences of racism and exclusion still exist within church life

  • Warm interactions on Sunday do not always translate into real connection

  • Honour can sometimes feel uncomfortable if rooted in imbalance

  • Inclusion requires care in how we invite people

  • People should be valued for their gifts, not as representatives of a category

  • Bias can still exist even when trying to include others

  • Leaders must examine their assumptions and blind spots

  • Representation matters

  • Diverse and younger voices must be included in leadership and decision making

3. Worship, Culture, and Expression

  • Worship is often shaped by familiarity

  • Unfamiliar languages and styles can create resistance

  • Yet unfamiliarity can become a doorway to deeper connection

  • Hearing one’s own language in worship can bring healing and belonging

  • Churches must choose

    • Stay comfortable

    • Or grow into wider expressions of worship

  • Practical steps include

    • Singing in different languages

    • Praying in mother tongues

    • Including diverse expressions

  • Personality also shapes engagement

  • Not all differences are cultural, some are personal

  • Worship must be supported by teaching

  • People need to understand the biblical vision behind intercultural worship

4. Intergenerational and Intercultural Church Life

  • Intercultural work includes intergenerational work

  • Generations function like cultures with different expectations

  • There is a growing gap between

    • First generation churches

    • Second generation young people

  • Younger generations may not connect with

    • Language

    • Style

    • Cultural references

  • Honest correction across generations can build trust

  • Humility is essential for learning across age groups

  • The goal is not choosing one group over another

  • The goal is creating a new culture together in Christ

5. Leadership, Fear, and Growth

  • Many leaders fear getting it wrong

  • Fear of saying the wrong thing often stops progress

  • Leaders feel pressure to have all the answers

  • This creates stress and isolation

  • Leadership must be shared, not individual

  • Acts 15 shows a model of collective discernment

  • The church discerns together, not alone

  • Growth requires making room for mistakes

  • Mistakes should lead to learning, not condemnation

  • Safe environments encourage people to contribute and grow

6. Building a Culture of Listening and Learning

  • Churches need intentional spaces for dialogue

  • Create regular forums to gather different voices

  • Listening must lead to action, not just conversation

  • Leaders must practise

    • Humility

    • Curiosity

    • Openness

  • Recognising personal bias is essential

  • True leadership says

    • We are learning together

    • We are discerning together

7. Vision and the Way Forward

  • The call is to build communities where

    • Christ is at the centre

    • Not one dominant culture

  • The church is invited to create something new together

  • A shared culture shaped by Christ can emerge

  • This journey requires

    • Courage

    • Patience

    • Ongoing dialogue

  • The commitment is to keep growing into communities where

    • Everyone is welcomed

    • Everyone is valued

    • Everyone belongs
